About This Chapter
The scene opens with a discussion between the Governess and her son-in-law. The Governess wants to know if she will be his second wife, or his sister's second wife. She asks her father if he will agree to this, and he replies that he will take his sister as his second woman. He then asks his mother why she agreed to his father's ridiculousness, and she replies that she knows his father, and that if he does not feel like it, he will not mention it. She then asks him why he did not tell her about the wet nurse's death. He tells her that he is tired and will rest in his room. She tells him that he should not be sad, as he is useless. He asks her to watch her way when she is walking. She says that she does not hate to see him, but that she has come to bid farewell to him. He says that he hopes she will get what she wants, and they will be meeting again soon. She is shocked to find out that he has not said goodbye to her, as she had thought he would. She also says that wet nurse has taken poison, and has died. She accuses her father and daughter of killing her and her mother for power
