About This Chapter
"Swish it's My Defeat" , the narrator tells us, is one of the most famous speeches in all of Shakespeare's plays. It's about a young doctor named Shuyin, who's a member of the royal family. Shuyin is the son of a wealthy landowner, and he's the one who runs the family's estate. He's also the man who has bribed a superior to make sure that Shuyin will be named the elder son of the family. The doctor tells Shuyin that he has something to tell him, but Shuyin doesn't know what to say. He says that he'll tell Shuyin the truth once he becomes Shuyin's elder son, and Shuyin promises that he won't tell anyone else about it until he has done so. He also says that his medical skills have "advanced by leaps and bounds" in the last few months, and that his disciple is "more than enough" to be a "royal doctor." Shuyin tells the doctor that he wants to know why Linyue is so obsessed with him, and the doctor says that Linyue's father is sick, and someone is making his son sick. The general says that the water in the river is very deep, so Shuyin should stop asking about it, and put his safety before anything. He then tells the story of how he found out about the girl who went missing 17 years ago, and how the girl's parents, the hongyuans, are visiting her every day. He thinks that this means that the girl is the mistress of the guangyuans and that they have an illegitimate child. He plans to expose the girl and her parents.
