The next morning, Jane wakes up in the middle of the night to find that her master is dead. He's so cold that his head is burning, and his body is so frozen that he can't breathe. Jane tells Jane that she's the new guard at the palace and that she saw her pass out in the courtyard the day before. Jane is shocked that the king would let her go for so long. She's even more shocked that he'd let her kneel in front of him for such a long time. Jane says that she hates the king more than anything else.
