In the palace, Jane tries to convince King Lear that she is no longer a servant of his, and that he is not responsible for the death of his daughter. Lear, however, tells her that his mother died when he was only three years old, and he had forgotten all of her possessions. Lear also tells Jane that he has found her father's old button in his former bedroom. Jane is shocked, but Lear assures her that he did not intend to kill her. Lear's mother had passed away when Lear was three, and Lear had been seriously ill when he had been a young prince.
