In this chapter, the audience is introduced to a new character, a young woman named Jane. She is a member of the Brotherhood of Magic, a group of witches who study the laws of nature and prophecy. Jane's father, the Brotherhood's founder, is dead, but she is alive and well. She and her twin brother, who is also a Brotherhood member, have been living together in Paris for a long time, and they are both very fond of each other. They are both good at magic, but they are very different from one another in their personalities. Jane tells her father that she is in love with a man named Mr. Roberts, and she asks him to come to Paris to help her in her quest for love.
