The story opens with a description of a strange phenomenon that has occurred in a neighborhood in north Jogja during an earthquake of that year. The narrator explains that he was in school when his father died, and that he and his friends felt the earthquake even though they didn't realize it was an earthquake at the time. He tells us that the strange phenomenon started in front of his house, his neighbor's house, and the house of his friend, Mr. Sadikin. He says that his friends and he were at ease with the strange phenomena for a few days, but then they noticed that the street light was tilting and that it was covered with a strange mushroom. Mr. zul, the narrator's friend, says that he doesn't know why the streetlight is tilting and covered with the mushroom. He calls the police, but they don't show up.
