The painter comes back from his trip abroad to paint the portrait of Miss Sheung before she is buried. The family asks the painter to keep the portrait a secret, but the painter refuses, saying that he is afraid of ghosts. The painter tells the pair that he has been wanting to go to the temple to see lanterns on August 15th, but he has not been able to because of the weather. He says that he wishes he could have a picture of her that he could carry with him so that he would be able to often see her. He also tells them that the portrait is to be mounted on a new mahogany frame, which the family bought for the purpose of using the portrait as part of a ghost wedding. The shen family wants to use the portrait for this purpose, and the painter is happy to help them.
