In this short scene, the Governess explains to the empress how she came to suspect that the General was responsible for the deaths of her father and her uncle. The Governess also explains that he ran into her at the bookseller's store and wanted to talk to her about the matter, but he couldn't get her to trust him. She tells him that she is worried about the General's health and that he has taken leave of absence from the court because of it.
