In this chapter, we learn that madoka has been asked to collect 3,000 yen from the eighteen other students at the school. She's supposed to do it, but she doesn't seem to have the nerve to do so. She tells us that she's been working as a dishwasher for about a month now, and that her English isn't good enough for her. She says that she can't do simple arithmetic, mental math, or mental math at all, because her father is an abacus expert. He's running an abacus school, and the students can do math by moving the beads on the abacus as they hear "the num bers" . So why should madoka have to do this math race? She says she'll just do it the way she normally would. She also says that if she loses, then she has to let the girls have her way with her. He says that he's not interested anymore in the abacus, because it's four digits long, and he'd rather work for kicks than for money. He also tells us about his sister, who's staying with her uncle, and how disappointed he is that he didn't have a chance to learn any math from his family. He wonders if God is playing with them, and wonders if they're having an abacus race to see who can do the most mental math. He hopes that his father is using an abacus, but he'll have to wait until he gives the signal to start the race. He thinks that his dad is using a fake abacus, and then he realizes that his sister is using the real one, too. He is shocked, and asks if he can use madoka's lessons to teach him to use his dad's abacus. He tells us he'm not sure if this is going to turn into a romance or not.
