The narrator tells the story of how he came to be the character he is. When he was younger, the narrator says, he didn't have a lot of money, so he was given black hair. He tells a story about how he and his grandpa talked about how they wanted him to grow up so that he could always stand on his own. The narrator says that even after his father died in the accident, he tried to keep the promise. He says that now that he's in first grade, he can make friends, and he'll never have to be lonely again. He also says that he will never be alone again, because he will always be surrounded by people who love and respect him. Asakura asks the narrator why he fell in love with her, and the narrator tells him that it was the first time he felt like he could believe in himself.
