About This Chapter
In this short speech, the half-wolf laments the fact that he is now dead. He wishes he had stayed in the academy, where he was supposed to have learned to brush his master's hands. The halfwolf asks the fox girl to tell him why she has been taken away. The fox girl replies that it is worse for her to have strange, short-lived beings in her home, who stink of death. She tells the halfwolf that they will do no harm unless they require it. She then tells the fox that the alliance between the dusk court and the Baroness will not last. The baroness, she says, is growing stronger than any other court in the world. She adds that the inquisitors among the dusks are stronger than anyone else. She says that she would like to see her mask again, but she knows that if she sets foot on the stairs, her head will be cut to pieces and her body burned. She also says that the mask was an accident, that night, when they had only two sections. She wonders if she has planned for her now that she is dead.
