In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, the halfwolf, who has come to the city of ravenna with his sister, Tullus. Tullus asks his father-in-law why he has come, and Tullus replies that he is looking for a gift for his daughter, who is sick with a fever. He also asks Tullus to tell the other half-wolf commanders that Tullus has left the city for good, and that if they do not obey Tullus, he will burn them out. He tells Tullus that his own people have taken control of the city's cannons, and they smell like "vanilla" .
