About This Chapter
In this scene, the half-human, half-animal, and half-elf meet again. This time, they're talking about the dusk court, which was a place that was once a place of great beauty and wonder. Now, however, it's a place full of "blasted creatures" and "strange kindred" . This is the first time we've seen the "Mordant" since he was born, and he's not happy about it. He doesn't know what to make of his new identity, since he hasn't been able to "heal" from the past month. He's worried that the undead will kill him and "simply make another" , and that the "ancients" will devour him and his family. He wonders why the old gods didn't eat the halfwolf or consume him himself . He also asks why the ancients haven't told him more about what happened between the half wolf and the zinn . The old gods, he says, were too busy eating the fox to eat the old god. He asks why it was that the ancient gods did not eat corvin or renmorrorian , even though he was a part of the wolf's army. He says that if he were you, he'd feel the same way. He wants to know what's wrong with you, and if you're a useful person, why don't you kill the child? He asks if the barons have finally taken control of the city, and she says that's what they've been doing for the last few days. She wonders if the undead are going to kill her, since she's killed so many people. She also wonders if she'll die for killing all the people she invaded, since the undead aren't really like humans in this city. She's pretty sure that if she hadn't killed all those people, she'd never have made contact with the undead. The undead, she says, are "bastardizations" of the servacs , the
