In this chapter, we learn that the shield is not really a shield at all; it's just a bunch of weird little devices that are supposed to protect us from the gods. We're not sure what the heck that means, but we're guessing it means that the gods can't harm us, which is why they're using the shields in the first place. In other words, the gods don't really trust the dudes who put the shields on. They're just tricking the dudes into believing that the shields will protect them, and that they can do whatever they want with the shields. The dude in question is the guy who made the masks. He's the one who swore an oath to the gods that he'd never harm himself, and he's also the dude who's been having sex with a half-wolf--the goddess of the underworld--in order to get her to protect him. The guy in question asks the dude if he knows how to fix the shield so that it won't be useful, and the dude answers that he doesn't, but he does know how to make it work. He also says that he can fix the shields so that they'll be useless if the gods come after them, which would be a good thing. He says that if they do come after him, he'll kill his mother, and then he can have sex with his other daughters. He tells the dude that he was betrayed by the gods, and now that he knows what's going on, he wants to kill him.
