About This Chapter
The next day, the refugee camp is besieged by the army of the federation. The baroness refuses to recognize her as the baronet's wife, and ravenna tells her that she should avoid the "eastern quarter" of the town where the baronesses live. She says that she does not want that to happen again, because she is afraid that the woman will waste food on herself and her children. She tells the story of how she used to hang out in the kitchens of the refugee camps, where the little children would pretend to be hungry, and she would make them believe that they were hungry. When she was pregnant, she says, she did not even know that there was food in the camp. She also says that poppa mended her brassiere, and that she even found a new wire to replace one that had been damaged by her father's attack. She adds that the food is fresh and that the smell of it is almost as good as cooking. They boil the water for another dish, and then ravenna asks her sister if she would like to help her make a dish of daikon soup
