This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which the Bulgar siblings are fighting over who is to blame for the return of Jo's illness. Senior Bulgar tells his younger sister that Jo would not get sick if it were not for her bullying. He tells her that she is his friend and that she should not blame him for being cruel to her. She tells him that if he dares to bully her again, she will beat him up. Bulgar then tells his older brother that he must take Jo to the woodsshed and deal with her if she gets too crazy. He says that he will try to hold the news of her illness back from Master Bulgar so that he can send her to Master
