About This Chapter
In this short scene, the dying Berio and his daughter try to forget their past. Berio asks his daughter to come closer to him, but she refuses, saying that she wants to see her own face. She tells him that she is dying, and that she needs to know that she will be forgiven. She says that she has come to see Berio because of her own sorrow. She blames herself for the deaths of everyone she knew, and blames the two of them for not being able to survive. She also blames Van Hood for being angry with her. Van Hood, she says, is on his deathbed, and he should go take her journal and read it to her. She reminds him that everyone is fighting for their lives, and they should be understanding. He says that he tried to give his father the journal many times, but he could not be forgiven and forget. He is now with his daughter, and Van Hood is gone. She asks if she can bring him back home, but Van Hood has already left, and she says that her mother is married to her father.
