About This Chapter
Carybdis, the pirate king, enters the inner circle of the city. He sees the baths, which are open to everyone. He hears the sounds of the inner gardens wooing the outer circle, and he almost jumps on his wife's hair. The doctor tells him that he is in perfect health and that his wife does not have to be rescued. He tells Cybdis that he cannot live in the city because the doctor has told him that there is no need for it. He then goes to the inner room, where the chores are listed. He is surprised to find that Cyba is there. He wonders if Cyba thinks he is the most handsome man ever to enter the city, and Cyba says that he must be. Cyba asks him if he is hungry, but Cyba replies that he will carry his basket. He also asks Cyba to spy on the servants' pots and pans. He says he cannot eat his wife, because she does not know it yet, but he will tell her what he is doing
