About This Chapter
The pirate balthazar tells the boy foxy that everything is fine in France, except for the fact that his family has been persecuted and that he has no home, family, friends, or loved ones. He asks the boy if he knows where St. Paul's church is, and the boy replies that he doesn't. The pirate says that if the boy is able to tell the right from the left, then he should be able to see the church from the right. The boy says that the church is ugly, and that the moat is full of hungry rats. He says that he will pay the boy for his services, but that he can't kill himself by hanging, because the rope on which the rope is tied is rotten. He then asks if he can feel his right cheek warm, his arm warm, and his skin warm, all of which he says he feels when he looks at the sun. He wants to know where he is, but the boy says he does not want to die, but he also does not know what he should do with his life. He gives the boy his life, saying that he is going to put his talents to good use. When the boy asks what his name is, the pirate replies that it is not a good one, and he will think of something else.
