About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that the stork is a bird that nests on the seacoasts of the Galapagos Islands. When the stork comes to visit, he is greeted by a group of pelicans, who flock to the stork's nest and eat the fish that are baked in the oven. The fish are then eaten by the stork, but the bird does not eat the rest of the fish. Panky, the bird's mother, tells the stork that she is sorry that the fish have not been eaten. She also tells the bird that she has tried to leave her nest for two days and nine months, but that she cannot because the stork has seen the fish on the sill of her bed. She asks the stork to bring her a baby, but he refuses, saying that it is for the stork. Panka tells him that he is taking the stork thing too seriously, and that he should not leave the nest. He tells her that he heard her fall from a roof and break her "squik" , and she tells him to look at her sad face. She tells him she knows who will cheer him up, and he tells her he is a knight in the hospital. The stork tells Panka that the baby is named Jean Baptiste, and Panka says that he needs a mother. She says she is going to be his mom.
