When the narrator returns to his childhood home, he finds that his mother, Tomoko, has not come to visit him. She has not apologized to him for the way she has treated him, and she has not even apologized to her husband, who has run off to marry another woman. He tells her that he will have to get angry with her again if she does not change her ways.
