In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of new characters, all of whom are introduced for the first time in the novel. The first person introduced is the Governess, who is a bit of a mystery to us because she's so new to the world of science fiction. The Governess and her companions are in a room in which they are forced to sit in a "pits" , which is a kind of room where people are "pitted" against one another. The two of them have no idea what they're supposed to be doing in this room, and they can't figure out a way to get out of it. They're so scared of the pit that they don't even know where to sit. The other two men in the room, who are also introduced, are also scared because they've never been in this kind of situation before. They are also afraid of the "pittings" because they have never seen anything like it before.
