The narrator tells the audience that he didn't expect the wedding to happen so quickly because he thought it would be a waste of time. However, when he sees the ring on the groom's finger, he realizes that it's a sign that the marriage has already taken place. He asks the groom why he's open about it, and the groom says that he doesn't know what to do. The narrator then asks the maid if she'll ask the groom to come back to work. The maid says that she's sorry, but she can't figure out how to answer the question. She says that if the groom knew that she was breaking the contract, he would be mad, or worse, he could use the excuse that she broke the contract as an excuse for ripping up the contract. The girl says that the only thing she can do now is to keep the contract quiet. She tells the maid that she thinks she should go back to her job, but the maid says she should be careful not to say anything to the groom that would make him think he'd stolen her away. She also says that both the groom and the maid are fast and smart, and that they look like they're in love with each other.
