About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a conversation between the Governess and her brother-in-law. The Governess tells her brother that she has an errand to attend to, so she's going to leave the project to him. She tells him that she'd like to see her son as a parent, not as a "parent from" . She also tells him to stop using the word "parent" when talking about her son, because it's "a pretty heavy word" to swing for "convenience." The two men discuss the Governer's meeting with the Board of Supervisors, and the two men agree that it must have been a good thing that the Board's representative came to the meeting. They also discuss the fact that they're both going to be parents in the future, and that they want to make sure that their son is "as his guardian" , meaning that he'll be the one who takes care of the child. The brothers discuss the baby's appearance, and they agree that the baby looks "almost a self-introduction." The brothers then discuss how they'll have to collect all the stickers they need to buy food for the children at the nursery school. The children will have to wait until the volunteers arrive to help, and then the children will be able to work in small groups. The men decide that the children should be allowed to play in the small groups, so that they don't have to be "crawling with kids." The children, however, are not allowed to crawl with the adults, so the brothers decide that they have to "act like the older brothers and share." The men then decide to feed the children right away, so they can get used to the new environment.
