She says that if it were her birthday, she would've given her mother the book, but her parents never rated her birthday. She tells the narrator that she'd like to give her son the book now, but that she can't because it's a birthday present. She apologizes, saying that she didn't mean to make her son upset, and that she had to stand by her word. She asks him if he would like to cut a cake with the children in the morning, and he says yes, but only two of them are awake. She then tells him to cancel what he said and come on now, because today's his birthday.
