About This Chapter
The ship's engines have been cut off, and the lieutenant tells the commander that he's lost the torpedo. He's not sure what's happened to the rest of the ship, but he figures they'll find a way to get back to the launch pad. The lieutenant tells him that the bathometer shows that the ship has some room in the water, but the relief map shows that there's no room at all. They're going to have to pull back, he tells the lieutenant. He asks the lieutenant to give him an initial report on the damage. He reports that the hull took the brunt of the shock, and that the bottom deck and rudder are in bad shape. He also reports that there is a fire in the main propulsion room. The fire squad has to go in to shut down the ventilation system, but they can't get in through the air duct. They hang on to the new launch for the missile until the lieutenant gives him the go-ahead to open the fuses. The commander tells him to go ahead and do it, because it's just a matter of a few minutes. He tells him the launch was a "simulation" , and everything was under his control. He says that the U.S.s. couldn't have been in better hands.
