About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the infection aboard the yabbin was caused by a bacterium called Rickettsia typhi, which can be transmitted from person to person. The infection was transmitted from one person to another via a group shower, and the men on board had to be quarantined and given antibiotics to ward off the spread of the disease. Doctor Livesey tells the men to take a shower and recharge their batteries in the hallway. He tells them to make sure to " disinfect every pore" of their skin. The men don't seem to understand why they're being quarantined, and they all freak out when they realize that they've been infected with Rickettsia Typhi. They're so freaked out that they can barely breathe. They can't sleep because of the heat, and Dr. Livesey warns them to be careful with their group showers. He also tells them that Henry, the first man to die from the disease, was infected by the same strain of Rickettsia that they now have to quarantine. They have to isolate the four men who are most likely to catch the disease and treat them immediately. They also have to test the men's levels of testosterone to see if they are susceptible to the infection. They find out that the men are unusually high in testosterone, which is a sign of a man's "dreadfulness."
