About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the lieutenant has received strict instructions from his superior, the governor of Syria. The lieutenant tells the governor that he has come to relieve himself in order to relieve the governor's "on edge" with the conflict between the two countries. He tells the lieutenant that he wants to make a call to the governor, and the lieutenant suggests that they go to the "right" side of the room, where they can see the exit to the well. The Lieutenant thinks this is a good idea, since they lost the trail of the man they're looking for. He remembers that the man thought that the exit was "west" of the well, and he thinks it's best to go the other way, since it'll be easier for them to find him.
