About This Chapter
In this short speech, Dr. Manette reveals that she knows what's going on between the two of them. She's sure that they're planning to kill each other, and she's also sure that the government won't be able to free Manette. She tells Manette that if he doesn't cooperate, the government will have to impose some kind of economic sanctions on the country, and Manette will be out of a job. She also warns him that he'll be blamed for the deaths of his son and daughter-in-law if he does anything to help them escape. She suggests that Manette take his son into his arms and watch him grow up, so that when he's old enough to leave, he will be free to do whatever he wants with his life. If Manette wants to exchange his freedom for Manette's, he can do it by saying one simple word: "I love you."
