In this chapter, the narrator tells us that she is in love with the man she loves, and that she wants him to make her love him. She wants to be able to pull him in tight and make her feel better. She also wants to make sure that he doesn't do anything to hurt her feelings. She tells the girls that she's not in charge of them anymore, but that she just wants to forget it. She's sorry, but it's her fault, she says, because she was the one who got her to come down to school. The girls are not happy to see her around, and they don't like the fact that she seems to be trying to escape the reality of her job as a teacher. The narrator says that he's the worst teacher in the world, and as a girl, he'd be the worst as a boyfriend. He says that the girls took the attitude that they did because they wanted to talk to her about anything, and because they knew that she could talk to them about anything. He thinks that's why they took the way they did, because they didn't want to forgive her for accepting her demotion. He also says that they are going to make the girls take back the decision to have her fired, and if they do, they'll accept her as theirs again.
