In the basement of the palace, Alice finds her way to the Queen's contest, where she will have the opportunity to replace a dancer who is ill. Alice wants to go to the contest because she has learned to dance, and she hopes that she can make a difference in the eyes of the guests. Miss Betsey tells Alice to stop drinking, because everyone else is already practicing dancing, and they cannot miss the Queen contest tonight.
