This chapter opens with a soliloquy by General wu. He tells us that he's one of the most powerful men in the kingdom and that he has fallen in love with Ling Ling. He wants her to be his new concubine, but she doesn't want the job. She's hiding because she's afraid that if she gets caught, she'll be punished. He's not going to let her go, he tells her, because she already likes another man. He also tells her that she can go back to her lover if she wants, but he won't let her because he already loves someone else. Worried that Ling Ling might be a deserter, he sends her back to his team. Ling Ling is trapped in the team, which means that she has no choice but to stay with him. Confused, he goes back to the human patrol station to find out what happened.
