About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the demon in the one-inch pot. The narrator tells us that those who have "light sins" will work to "redeem their sins" and those with "moderate" sins will be "taught by the Xuanling sect" . In other words, those who do not have a lot of sin will be taught how to "relieve their sins." The narrator then tells us about a new disciple named Binglan, who has been brought to the hall by the leader of the sect. The elder, who is the second-most powerful man in the sect, is not very interested in the new disciple's story. Binglan asks the elder why he hasn't asked him about the new girl, and the elder tells him that the girl's hometown is in the middle of nowhere, so he went down the mountain to find her and recruit her as a disciple. He then tells Binglan that his hall lacks "too many merits" after his junior brother's death, and that he should think about how to deal with the problem. The old man tells him to wipe the old man's face, and Binglan agrees to go and clean the room.
