In this chapter, we learn that the first humans to arrive in the sky pit were the same people who saw the meteor and experienced the same events as we did. The people who later came in by accident were just like us, and they all came in from the forest. The probability of entering the pit is small, but closer to the center is higher, so it's possible that the power of the pit itself is moving toward the center.
