He's worried that he'll be laughed at if he tells us about his former friends' horrible treatment of him, but he doesn't want to be a laughingstock. He says that he didn't know how to be "romantic" before, but now that he thinks about it, he thinks it's "too different" from his usual self. He wonders if chang is still the same person he was before, and he wonders if it might be because of the way they express their feelings in this scene. The narrator says that it must be because they've always been by each other's side, and that it would be natural for them to express their love.
