In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character named "man qian" . He is a student at the university who has just won a competition for his thesis. He tells his friends that the competition has taken place, but that an incident has occurred, and that he cannot show his joy because there are many other students who would be concerned about the incident. He feels uneasy about the fact that he is the only one who cares for the incident, and he wonders if this is a good thing. He also tells the other students that he has come to find out the whereabouts of Dongfang, who is the president and director of the university's performing arts club. He wants to know why he stopped writing, and why he has stopped watching the rehearsal. The teacher, Luyong, tells him that the students do not need to worry, because he is not that kind of person. He explains that the teacher left the club because he was looking for a girlfriend, and later, he resigned. The old professor, who was also a member of the club, became ill, and no one knew how to teach the students how to do their part in the competition. The other students all left, and the club was disbanded.
