This chapter opens with a description of the fallen leaves that are piling up in the yard. The narrator tells the audience that he is afraid that Ching-yi will have to wait a while before he can clean up the mess. He tells the story of how his father used to give him a reward for his work in jin-ling, or picking up leaves. This reward was from a mythical creature with an appetite for gold, and protection of its possessions
