About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a soliloquy about the afterlife, in which the narrator offers paper talismans to the heavens and wine to the earth. He then goes on to tell the story of how he came to be in this particular house, and how he offers the talismans as a way of saying goodbye to his child. The child whimpers, "It's time for you to move onto the next life" , and the narrator moves on to his next task. This time, however, the child is the master of the house. He welcomes the master and tells him that he has just arrived in the area where the taoist is staying. He tells the master that he's just about to have a drink with the master when he suddenly has a sudden illness. He asks the master to perform a divination for him. The master's divination results show that his presence in the house has offended the "evil qi" in the place, and that this has caused him to get sick. He wants to know what's going on, so he performs a divination on himself. He finds out that there's no evil in the
