The chapter opens with a description of the "dawn of the dead" . It's 2004, and it's been a year since Dr. Bledsoe was last seen alive. He's still wheezing with a nasty cold, and he can't even get out of the room. The narrator tells us that the doctor's nose is still stuffed with a bad case of the plague . The doctor says that he's going to go home to get his code, but the narrator says that's not going to happen, because the code isn't there. He asks the doctor to go upstairs and talk to Darnay alone in the hallway. Darnay asks the narrator what's in the box, and the narrator tells him that it seems like Darnay has put on a good show. He says that Darnay seems to have put on quite a bit of a fight, and that he doesn't have any reason to go any further. He tells the narrator to chill out.
