About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of a pet cemetery, where the undead have taken out the stomach of a friend of the dead. This is said to be the cause of the attack and eating of people in the novel, and it is said that Ursula would have eaten the dead man if he had been alive. The chapter ends with Ursula's exclamation that the recipe for the potion is "abject" and that she would rather not eat it. She asks if they can use the plant she has just picked to make the potion, and the boy says that he will, but that he has doubts about its ability to bring back anything that is already dead. He asks Ursula if she would like to eat the guts of a dead man, and she says she would. The boy asks if he can use some of his grandfather's chewed-up hydrangea leaves, and he says he will. He says that his grandfather chews on the leaves sometimes, and this is why he has trouble chewing on them. Ursula asks him if he will be late for the funeral of his father, who is to be laid to rest the next day. She tells him that she accidentally fell asleep by the river the day before, and that her mother caught her off guard. She says that her father will not let her leave the house again, even if she goes to school, and Ursula says she will not even go to school if her father dies.
