About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Dr. Manette is still in love with Lucentis, and that he wants to marry him. He invites the two of them to a dance party, and the two men dance together. The narrator tells us that he's not sure what to make of the dance, but he does want to know what's going on between the two young men. He asks the narrator if he'd like to dance with him, but the narrator doesn't know how to respond. He tells the narrator that he acted impulsively when he saw the young man put his hand around the waist of the young woman. He apologizes, and says he'll leave as his mentor. He says that the air in the house has gotten so thick that he can't help but think that the young men are "warring a cold war." The narrator says that he understands the young couple's intentions, but that it's clear that they're waging a cold battle. He also says that Dr Manette seems to be avoiding him and treating him like "thin air." He adds that he hasn't been keeping a close eye on him, as well, but says he just wants to avoid seeing him upset every day
