In this chapter, the narrator tells Mr. Ao that he has heard that a promising scientist is in the process of becoming a professor at the medical college of Beida. He tells Ao to be polite. He also tells him that the funds for his research depends on the scientist, and that he hopes Ao will be able to use this opportunity to stage a "lucky coincidence" with him. The narrator then tells us that he is going to invite the scientist to dinner and invite him to become his lover. He says that they will become lovers. He asks Ao what is going on, and he says that he doesn't believe that the scientist has a man between him and the wall, another handsome man. He then says that if he changes the angle, he sees that what he wants is to support his younger brother. He adds that he's no longer in love with Ao, but that he promised him that he would support his brother's research. He wonders where he got the money from, and Ao says that his father is stingy and that there is no way he will get any money from him. He concludes that his brother must have changed his mind, but he wonders how it is going with the scientist.
