When the narrator arrives at his uncle's house, he finds that his father has asked his uncle to give him a gift: a ride home. The narrator is surprised to find that his uncle has arranged for him to be picked up by his roommate, the dorm manager. He is also surprised to learn that his roommate is returning home from a trip abroad. He asks his uncle if he can take him home with him, and his uncle agrees.
