In this chapter, we are introduced to the protagonist, who is called "mandongzuo" or "the year whoosh" . He is introduced as the "white hair boy" from the beginning of the chapter, and we are told that he is the protagonist of the story. The protagonist introduces himself as "ma san" , which means "man of the year" in Chinese. He explains that he and the other characters in the story are from the year of the rooster, which is the year in which the rooster was born. He also explains that the rooster is a symbol of time, and that he has come to the rooster's house in order to collect the money he needs to buy food for himself and his family.
