The narrator tells us that Madame Pernelle's lips are "really sweet" , and that no one else has seen him. He asks if she saw him, and she tells him that she did not. The narrator is sorry that he has to go back to the place where he was last seen, but he is afraid that he will have to do so again. He tries to get out of her way, but she will not let him go. He tells her that she is so mysterious that he thinks she might be a street sweeper or a streetcar . She tells him to go away, and he says he will. She asks him why he is there again, and the narrator says that he is trying to get into her way. He says he has been there so many times that he remembers how many times he was there, and now he is nervous that he forgot the size he was. He apologizes and says he did not mean to do it.
