In this chapter, we are introduced to a young girl named Liliane, who has just returned from school. Liliane's mother has warned her that if she does not do well in her exams, it will be difficult for her to get into a university. When Liliane returns home from school, she finds that her brother has killed her father and mother. She asks her mother to tell her to go to bed so she can study for her exams. She also asks her sister, Nancy, why she has become a victim of the killers. She tells Liliane that she has been riding Nancy's school bus all the time and that she always brings snacks to share with Liliane when she has to stay away from school because she is afraid of being bitten by the attackers. Liliana tells her sister that she must stay alive for her sister's sake. She says that she will go to Krook's Palace to find her sister.
