"Un birthday" is the title of the chapter, and it's the first time we've heard it in a long time. It's also the last time we hear it in the novel, so we're not exactly sure what to make of it. We're guessing that it means "unhappy birthday" or "happy birthday," but we'll have to wait until the end of the novel to find out what it means. In the meantime, we get a little bit of a flashback to the beginning of the story, when we first meet Hiroshi, who's just returned from a trip to Europe. He's been looking for "commoners exotic" , so he's come to visit. Hiroshi has a gift for Hiroshi: a "beaded brace" . He gives it to Hiroshi as a present, and Hiroshi says that he'll give it to his friend, Mami , if he wants to. He also tells her that he doesn't want her to worry about it, since she'll be fine without his help. We learn that Mami's parents are not home much, so Hiroshi can't bring in a visitor to meet her. He tells her to come in, and she agrees. She also tells him that she's not worried about him coming to visit her, since he'd probably be happy without her help. Okay, now we get to the part where we find out about the beaded brace, which Hiroshi gave to Mami . The beaded brace is a gift from him, and he says he made it for himself, but when he wakes up, he realizes that he isn't quite as pretty as he thinks he is. He
