It's the first day of the hike, and Hiroshi and Ise are getting ready to go to the top of Kanko Peak, which is said to be a sacred place for the spirits of the mountain gods. Ise says he's going to wait for them, but Hiroshi doesn't want to part with a girl, because he thinks the fox spirits will steal women away and take their places. He's also worried that they'll get cursed by the gods, so he'd rather be alone than be with a woman. He thinks they're on their way to the shrine, but they haven't yet reached the shrine. He wonders if there's some kind of god that's been haunting them, and he wonders if they've been cursed. Hiroshi is relieved to see that the shrine isn't dedicated to a god, but he can't help feeling a little creeped out by the shrine's appearance. He wants to go back to his room and wash his hair, but Ise is there to wash it for him, and she's there to do the same for him.
