The story of Mr. of 30 a Year begins with Mr. Liu, a thirty-year-old gay man, asking Mr. Manette to keep track of his own work. He hopes to get a satisfactory result from the meeting. The deadline for the meeting has passed and Mr. Menette wants to know if he has a place to go. He says he has fantasized about doing so but is still "stuck" in his work because "branching" by people he knows is impossible. He asks if he can go on a date with someone he knows, but is afraid that the date will be boring. He suggests that they go to a movie, go shopping, and watch a movie together. He also suggests that if there is something he would like to do for the future, he can tell him.
