The narrator tells us that he's been a bachelor for 30 years. He's a married man, too, and that's why he doesn't want to tell his wife about it. He wants her to know that he was wearing a turtleneck to hide his neck from her, so she can't see what's going on between him and her husband. He also wants to know why he didn't tell her about it when he first got married. The narrator says he'll tell her when he gets home.
